ABSTRACT

Objective:To investigate and determine the epidemic scope of plague natural foci in Yulong County of Yunnan Province, and to assess its epidemic risk, so as to providing basis for monitoring, prevention and control of plague. Methods:In 2017, 2 - 3 natural villages were selected from 8 villages and towns in Yulong County according to geographical landscape, altitude, population and area. During October and November, small mammal hosts and their parasitic fleas were captured by the night trap (cage) method, Yersinia pestis was isolated from host animal organs, and plague F1 antigen and antibody were detected by colloidal gold test. Plague specific antigen was detected by reverse indirect hemagglutination test (RIHA) in self-dead small mammals. Animal serum from dogs, cats and mice were collected for detection of plague F1 antibody by indirect hemagglutination test (IHA). Results:A total of 1 019 host animals including self-dead small mammals were collected, belonging to 22 species, 12 genera, 6 families, 4 orders. Among them, 1 016 small mammals were captured by tools and 996 were outdoors, with the capture rate of 25.28% (996/3 940). The dominant species of small mammals outdoors were Apodemus chevrieri, Rattus (R.) rattus, Eothenomys miletus and Crocidura attenuate, which accounted for 30.32% (302/996), 22.09% (220/996), 17.37% (173/996) and 12.35% (123/996). The common species were Niviventer confucianus, R.nitidus and R.norvegicus, which accounted for 8.13% (81/996), 4.02% (40/996) and 1.81% (18/996). A total of 20 small mammals of 9 species were captured indoors in the residential area, and the capture rate was 1.11% (20/ 1 800). The dominant species were R.norvegicus, R.nitidus and Mus musculus, which accounted for 30.00% (6/20), 25.00% (5/20) and 10.00% (2/20). Eighteen small mammals of 8 species were infected with 67 parasitic fleas, belonging to 5 species, 5 genera, 3 families. The total flea infection rate was 1.77% (18/1 019) and the total flea index was 0.070. Among them, 49 parasitic fleas from 4 small mammals of 3 species were collected indoors. The flea infection rate was 19.05% (4/21) and the flea index was 2.333. Leptopsylla segnis had the highest flea infection rate of 9.52% (2/21) and flea index of 0.571. Ctenocephalides felis had the highest flea index of 1.571 and flea infection rate of 4.76% (1/21). They were the main flea species on the body surface of small mammals in residential areas. There were 14 small mammals infected with parasitic fleas outdoors, and 18 fleas in 5 species were collected with flea infection rate of 1.40% (14/998) and flea index of 0.018. Among them, Leptopsylla segnis had the highest flea infection rate was 0.50% (5/998) and the flea index was 0.005. The flea infection rate of Neopsylla specialis specialis was 0.40% (4/998), and the flea index was 0.004. Ctenophthalmus quadratus had the highest flea index of 0.007, and the flea infection rate ranked the third with 0.30% (3/998). The flea infection rate and flea index of Frontopsylla spadix spadix were the lowest, which were 0.20% (2/998) and 0.002, respectively. Ctenophthalmus quadratus, Leptopsylla segnis and Neopsylla specialis specialis were the dominant parasitic fleas on the surface of outdoor small mammals. A total of 419 indicator animal sera were collected, including 402 dog sera. One of them was positive by IHA, with a positive rate of 0.25% (1/402). Seventeen serum samples were collected from cats and mice, and IHA test results were negative. Yersinia pestis was isolated and cultured from the organs of small mammals and the detection of Yersinia pestis by colloidal gold test was negative. RIHA test of self-dead small mammals was negative. Conclusion:A plague indicator animal positive spot is newly found in the plague natural foci in Yulong County, and the plague epidemic monitoring, prevention and control in this region should be strengthened.

ABSTRACT

Objective By analyzing the epidemic characteristics and related indicators of SARS (2003) and COVID-19(2020), to explore the reasons for the similarities and differences of the two epidemics, so as to provide reference for epidemic prevention and control. Methods The general situation, clinical classification, activity history, contact history, family members’ contact and incidence of the two infectious diseases in Guangzhou were collected and used to analyze the time characteristics, occupational characteristics, age characteristics and other key indicators of the two diseases, including the number of cases, composition ratio (%), mean, median, crude mortality, etc. Results A total of 1 072 cases of SARS (2003) were included in the study. 353 of which were severe cases with the incidence of 30.13%. 43 cases of death were reported with a mortality rate of 4.01%. The average age was 46 years old, and 26.31% of the cases were medical staff. The interval time between first report to continuous zero reports was 129 days. As to COVID-19 (2020), a total of 346 cases were included. 58 of which were severe cases with the incidence of 16.67%. One case of death was reported with a mortality rate of 0.29%. The average age was 38 years old, and no hospital infection among medical staff was reported. The interval time between first report to continuous zero reports was 35 days. Conclusions The prevention and control strategies for COVID-19 (2010) are more effective compared to that of SARS (2003), and the emergency response procedures are worth to be evaluated and summarized.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVESTo investigate a survey about acceptance of central slaughtering of live poultry in residents of Guangzhou.

METHODSWe conducted a telephone survey by sampling residents with fixed-line telephone and with normal hearing, whose age is more than 15 years, by Mitofsky-Waksberg two-stage method during Jan 6(th) to 8(th), 2014. 358 residents finished the telephone questionnaire by 12 320 health hot line. We investigated the acceptance rate of city-wide central slaughtering permanently. We compared the difference between the respondents and the 2010 Guangzhou census data by Cohen's effect sizes (w) and weighted by population age and sex. We used χ(2) test to compare the acceptance rate of central slaughtering in residents with different characteristic. We used multiple logistic regression analysis to analyze the factors.

RESULTSThe difference in gender and age was small between respondents and the 2010 Guangzhou census data (w value was 0.13, 0.28, respectively), but that in education and marital status was large (w value was 0.52, 0.31, respectively). 49.0% (95% CI: 43.7%-54.3%) accept city-wide central slaughtering permanently. The acceptance rate of city-wide central slaughtering permanently in those who bought fresh, chilled and frozen poultry in their family in previous year was 54.3% (133/245), 60.0% (57/95) and 59.8% (49/82), respectively. It was more than those who didn't buy fresh, chilled and frozen poultry (38.1% (43/113), 44.9% (118/263) and 45.7% (126/276); χ(2) values were 8.15, 6.40 and 5.03; P values were 0.004, 0.011 and 0.025, respectively). The acceptance rate of city-wide central slaughtering permanently in those who deem fresh poultry taste better than live poultry was 64.9% (24/38). It more than those who deem not (47.0%, 151/320) (χ(2) = 4.22, 6.02, P = 0.040, 0.014, respectively). The acceptance rate of city-wide central slaughtering permanently in the male (OR = 2.68, 95% CI: 1.64-4.37) and those who deem getting sick due to buying live birds from LPM (OR = 1.72, 95% CI: 1.05-2.82), who can accept only fresh poultry carcass supply (OR = 2.39, 95% CI: 1.33-4.30), Who bought live poultry in their family in previous year (OR = 0.29, 95% CI: 0.11-0.74), who will decrease the consumption after ban on live poultry sale (OR = 0.50, 95% CI: 0.30-0.83) was 58.6% (109/186), 59.0% (92/156), 60.7% (139/230), 44.9% (132/295), 36.6% (68/186), respectively.

CONCLUSIONIn the early stage of avian influenza A(H7N9) epidemic in Guangzhou, the rate of acceptance of central slaughtering permanently in residents was not so high. Who deem getting sick due to buying live birds from LPM, who could accept only fresh poultry carcass supply and the male more accept city-wide central slaughtering permanently.
